986. Limitations of Two Eiruvs for Two Days
Eiruvin 8:11
The statement in halacha 8:3 that one may make two eiruvs in different directions for two days applies only when the person is able to access both eiruvs on the first day (i.e., neither is outside his Shabbos boundary). If, on the first day, he is not able to access the eiruv for the second day, then the second eiruv is not valid. Since the mitzvah of eiruv requires that the food can be eaten while it is still day, if one cannot access the second day’s eiruv on the first day, it is not considered food that can be eaten while it is still day.
Eiruvin 8:12
Therefore, if a person placed one eiruv 2,000 cubits to the east of his home for the first day (meaning that he cannot walk to the west at all), an eiruv placed to the west for the second day would be invalid, whether it’s one cubit, 100 cubits or 1,000 cubits to the west. The second eiruv cannot be accessed on the first day because he can’t travel west at all.
