963. Not Making a Shittuf for Part of a City

Eiruvin 5:23

When one assigns a share in the shittuf to all the residents of the city, if all the residents participate in the same shittuf he need not inform them because he is acting to their advantage. The rules regarding one who forgot to join the shittuf with the other residents of his city, one who spent Shabbos in another city, and when there are non-Jewish residents in a city are the same as those for analogous situations in a courtyard and an alley.

Eiruvin 5:24

If all the residents of a city made a shittuf together except for the residents of one alley, those who did not participate impede everyone’s ability to carry. In such a case, the residents should erect a pillar at the entrance to the alley, setting it apart and enabling the others to carry. This is why a shittuf cannot be made for half of a city: either the whole city participates in a shittuf or each alley makes its own. The residents of each alley should erect a pillar at its entrance to set it apart from other domains and not impede others’ ability to carry.
