904. Travel on Friday
Shabbos 30:10
Eating meat and drinking wine on Shabbos is a form of pleasure so long as it is within one’s financial means. On Shabbos and yom tov, a set meal at which wine will be served may not be scheduled for when the study hall is in session. In earlier generations one would daven shacharis and musaf at shul, go home and have the second Shabbos meal, then go to the study hall to learn Torah until the afternoon, when he would daven mincha. He would then eat the third meal - a set meal at which wine is served - and continue eating and drinking until Shabbos was over.
Shabbos 30:11
One is not permitted to travel more than three parsaos (around eight miles) from the beginning of the day on Friday in order to ensure that one will arrive home early enough to prepare his Shabbos meals. It is not sufficient to rely on one’s family members who do not know that he will arrive that day. This certainly applies to visiting others because showing up unexpectedly will embarrass them when they do not have enough food for last-minute guests.
