865. A Corpse on Shabbos
Shabbos 26:20
While carrying a corpse on Shabbos is prohibited, it may be anointed and washed so long as one does not move any of its limbs. One may pull a pillow out from under a body so that it will be left lying on the ground, which will help to keep it from decomposing faster. One may bring a utensil to cool a body, or to place on its stomach to keep it from swelling. The deceased’s orifices may be plugged to keep air from entering. The jaw may be tied, not to close the mouth but to keep it from opening further. A corpse's eyes may not be closed on Shabbos.
Shabbos 26:21
If a corpse is lying in the sun, one may put a loaf of bread or a baby on it and then move the body into the shade. Similarly, if a fire breaks out in a courtyard where there is a corpse, one may put a loaf of bread or a baby on the body and then remove it from the courtyard. In such a case, if a loaf of bread or a baby is not available, the corpse may simply be saved from the fire. This is permitted because if it were not, it is likely that one might be tempted to douse the flames. Carrying something with a loaf of bread or a baby on it is only permitted in the case of a corpse because a person is made distressed and anxious by the presence of a corpse.
