864. Animal Fodder on Shabbos
Shabbos 26:18
Regarding bundles of straw, wood or twigs, if they were prepared for use as animal fodder, they may be carried, otherwise not. If a person brought in bundles of madder (rubia), hyssop or thyme in order to use them as fuel, they may not be used on Shabbos. If they were brought for use as animal fodder, they may be used. The same is true of other herbs.
Shabbos 26:19
One may not rake food that was put in front of an ox that is being fattened for slaughter, whether it is in a feeding trough that is a utensil or one that is a permanent fixture. One may likewise not brush the animal food to one side in order to keep it from mixing with dung. These things are prohibited as a preventive measure against the possibility that one may come to level the ground. One may take food that had been placed in front of a donkey and put it in front of an ox but not vice versa because food that had been before an ox gets ruined by its saliva and is unfit to be eaten by other animals. Leaves that make a foul stench that are not eaten by animals may not be handled on Shabbos. The same is true of hooks on which fish are hung. Hooks on which meat is hung, however, may be handled on Shabbos.
