863. Fit for Use as Animal Food

Shabbos 26:16

Anything that can be used as food for animals or birds and that is common among people may be carried on Shabbos. For example, one may carry dried beans that are food for goats but not fresh beans. One may carry a shrubbery that is food for deer, mustard seed that is food for doves and bones that are food for dogs. One may likewise carry all the shells and seeds that can be fed to an animal. Regarding inedible shells and seeds, one should eat the edible portion and then toss the refuse behind him because they may not be carried. One may carry meat that has gone bad because it can be eaten by animals. One may likewise carry raw meat, whether it has been salted or not, because it is fit for human consumption. This also applies to raw salted fish but not to unsalted fish.

Shabbos 26:17

We may not handle shards of glass on Shabbos even though they can be eaten by ostriches, nor bundles of sticks from a vine even though they can be eaten by elephants, nor wild onions even though they can be eaten by ravens because these and similar things are not common for people to have.
