Removing hair from a human body renders one liable for a subordinate labor of shearing. For this reason, one may not wash his hands with something that will definitely remove hair (certain abrasive cleansers). One may clean his hands using a powder made from frankincense, pepper, jasmine, and similar substances. There is no concern that he might remove the hair on his hands because this is not one’s intention. What if someone combined a substance that will definitely remove hair with a substance that might or might not remove hair? In such a case, we act according to the ingredient that makes up the major portion of the mixture. If it is the thing that will certainly remove hair, the mixture is prohibited; if it is the other ingredient, the mixture is permitted.
