798. Anointing

Shabbos 21:22

On Shabbos, one may eat coriander seed, hops, hyssop and other types of food and drink that healthy people typically eat and drink. Even though these serve as a remedy by being eaten, it is permitted because healthy people typically eat such things. If one drank asafoetida (a bitter resin from various species of an herb called Ferula) before Shabbos on several occasions, he may drink it on Shabbos even in a place where it is not normally consumed by healthy people. One may drink Egyptian beer in all places.

Shabbos 21:23

One is permitted to anoint himself on Shabbos using oils that healthy people use to anoint themselves even if his intention is for healing purposes. One may not do so with oils that are not normally used by healthy people. If a person has pain in his groin, he may not apply wine or vinegar but he may apply oil. Rose oil may only be used in a place where healthy people also anoint themselves with it. One may anoint himself with oil and salt in any location. If one injured his hand or foot, he may soak it in wine but not vinegar. If he has a delicate nature, he may not even do so in wine.
