796. Grinding

Shabbos 21:18

Dicing vegetables is a subordinate labor of grinding. Therefore, one may not shred straw or carobs for animals, neither in large or small pieces, as this resembles grinding. One may cut gourds for an animal, or an animal carcass for dogs, because there is no halachic concept of grinding fruit. One may untie a bundle of straw for an animal, and one may spread out small sheaves. One may not spread out large sheaves because doing so causes one to exert himself.

Shabbos 21:19

One may partake of hyssop and similar things that were stored for use as animal fodder, breaking some off with one’s fingers. One may not break off a large amount with his hands so that he does not come to follow the weekday procedure and crush them.
