756. Transporting Seeds

Shabbos 18:6

One who transports seeds that are not suitable for human consumption is liable for a volume nearly the size of a dried fig. One would be liable for transporting two cucumber seeds or gourd seeds, or five Egyptian bean seeds. Coarse bran renders one liable in a volume suitable to put on the hole of a crucible for refining gold. Fine bran depends: if intended for human consumption, the volume is the size of a dried fig; if for use as animal feed, enough to fill a kid's mouth. The volume of dye is enough to dye a small garment. The volume of buds and carobs that have not yet sweetened is the size of a dried fig. After they have sweetened, the volume is a kid’s a mouthful. The volume for wild onions, mustard, and other foods that are pickled is the size of a dried fig whether or not they have sweetened.

Shabbos 18:7

If a person transports seeds for eating, the liable amount is five. If they are intended for use as fuel, they are the same as wood (refer to halacha 18:4). If they are intended for performing calculations or for planting, one is liable for transporting two. Hyssop also depends on one’s intention: if intended for human consumption, one is liable for transporting the size of a dried fig; if for use as animal feed, the volume is a kid's mouthful; if for use as fuel, the same as wood; if for the purification of a metzora, the volume is enough to perform the sprinkling.
