689. Three Scenarios

Shabbos 12:19

There are three scenarios regarding picking an object up from one place in a public domain and putting it down elsewhere in the public domain: (1) if the distance between the two points is less than four cubits, doing so is permitted; (2) if the distance is more than four cubits but less than 5 3/5 cubits (the diagonal of a four-cubit by four-cubit square), doing so is prohibited but a person would not be liable; (3) if more than 5 3/5 cubits, one is liable.

Shabbos 13:1

One who transports an object from one type of domain (public or private) to the other, or who transports it more than four cubits in a public domain, is not liable unless he picked up the item from a place that is at least four handbreadths by four handbreadths (about a foot on each side) and put the item down in a place that is also at least four handbreadths by four handbreadths.
