686. Carrying in an Unusual Manner

Shabbos 12:13

One is not liable for transporting an object between domains on the back of his hand, with his foot, in his mouth, in the crook of his arm, in his ear, in the pocket of a garment worn upside-down, in between the layers of his clothes, in the hem of his garment, or in his shoe or sandal. This is because he didn’t transport the object in a way that people normally do.

Shabbos 12:14

If a person transports a heavy load on his head, like a full sack, a piece of furniture, etc., which he places on his head and holds with his hands, he is liable because this is a normal way for such things to be transported. It is therefore no different from carrying something on his shoulder or in his hand. If he put a light object, like a garment, a book or a knife on his head and transported it without using his hand, he is not liable because he didn’t transport the object in a way that people normally do. One who transports an object four cubits (about six feet) in the public domain is liable even if he raises the item above his head.
