684. Picking Up and Putting Down

Shabbos 12:9

One who transfers an object from one domain to another is not liable unless he transfers an object of a useful size from a private domain to a public domain or vice versa. Also, he must take the object up in one domain and place it down in the other domain. One is not liable for transporting if he took the object up and did not put it down, put it down but did not take it up (such as if another placed it in his hand), or transferred something that is smaller than useful. Additionally, one who carries an object a distance of four cubits (about six feet) in a public domain is not liable unless he takes up an object of significant size at the start and places it down at the end.

Shabbos 12:10

If a person throws an object from one type of domain to the other or hands it to a person in the other type of domain, he is liable for performing a subordinate labor of transferring. Similarly, one who throws or hands an object the distance of four cubits in a public domain is liable for performing a subordinate labor of transferring. One who throws an object in an unusual fashion is not liable.
