682. More Ways to Passively Douse a Fire

Shabbos 12:5

If a chest or cabinet catches fire, one may bring a goat skin or some other material that will not catch fire. He spreads it over the part of that piece of furniture that has not caught fire to keep the fire from spreading.

Shabbos 12:6

If a garment catches fire, one may spread it out and put it on. If doing so happens to extinguish it, it is of no consequence. Similarly, if a Torah scroll catches fire, one may unroll it and read from it. If doing so happens to extinguish it, it is of no consequence. One may put water on the part that has not yet caught fire. Again, if doing so happens to extinguish it, it is of no consequence. If a person left a candle burning on a board, one may shake the board, which will cause the candle to fall. If doing so happens to extinguish it, it is of no consequence. However, if the candle was put there intentionally before Shabbos began, the board may not be moved even after the candle is extinguished.
