562. The Time of a Bris
Milah 1:7
When a convert joins the Jewish people, he must first be circumcised. If he was already circumcised as a non-Jew, they must extract some “blood of the covenant” on the day he converts. Similarly, if a child is born without a foreskin, he must have blood extracted on the eighth day in lieu of a circumcision. A hermaphrodite, born with both types of genitals, must be circumcised on the eighth day. A baby born by C-section and a baby born with two foreskins are also circumcised on the eighth day.
Milah 1:8
Circumcision is only performed during the day, after the sun has risen, as per Leviticus 12:3, “On the eighth day...” - specifically by day, not by night. This applies both to a bris performed on time on the eighth day and to one delayed, i.e., from the ninth day on. If a bris is performed after dawn and any time throughout the day, it is valid. It is, however, a mitzvah to perform the bris early in the day because zealous people are quick to perform mitzvos.
