534. Incense and Fragrant Oil

Brachos 9:2

A bracha is not be recited on incense until a cloud of smoke rises from it. If the incense comes from a tree, the bracha “Who created fragrant trees” is recited; if from an herb, “Who created fragrant herbs” is recited. If the incense came from an animal source or something similar, the bracha “Who created different types of spices” is recited.

Brachos 9:3

The bracha over balsam oil and similar such things is “Who created pleasant oil.” If a person pressed or soaked olives until they produced a fragrant oil, he would recite the bracha “Who created fragrant trees.” If spices were mixed into oil, as was the case with the anointing oil, the appropriate bracha would be “Who created different types of spices.” If one person brought another both oil and myrtle, he should recite the bracha on the myrtle and include the oil, because the bracha “Who created fragrant trees” is said on both of them.
