447. How Not to Treat a Sefer Torah
Tefillin, Mezuzah v’Sefer Torah 10:5
One may place a sefer Torah on top of another sefer Torah; it goes without saying that a Torah may be placed on top of chumashim. Chumashim may be placed on top of books of Nach (the Prophets and the Writings) but books of Nach may not be placed on top of chumashim, nor may chumashim be placed on top of sifrei Torah. No holy texts – not even works of law and Midrash - may be thrown. One may not enter the restroom wearing an amulet that contains verses from holy texts unless it is covered with leather.
Tefillin, Mezuzah v’Sefer Torah 10:6
One may not enter a bathhouse, a restroom or a cemetery while holding a sefer Torah, even if it is covered by a mantle and placed in a case. One may not read from a Torah unless he moves four cubits (about six feet) away from a corpse or a restroom. One may not hold a sefer Torah while naked, nor sit on a seat on which a sefer Torah is resting.
