424. Storage Facilities

Tefillin, Mezuzah v’Sefer Torah 6:7

A storehouse for straw, a barn for cattle, a woodshed, and other types of storage facilities do not require a mezuzah as per Deuteronomy 6:9, “your homes,” meaning houses that are designated for your use. Therefore, if a barn is used by women as a changing room, it requires a mezuzah since it is used as a dwelling for humans. Structures like a guard booth, a portico, a porch, a garden and a corral do not require a mezuzah because they are not dwellings. If buildings that require a mezuzah open up to one of these structures, then they would require a mezuzah.

Tefillin, Mezuzah v’Sefer Torah 6:8

Pursuant to the above halacha, gates to courtyards, to alleys, and to cities and towns all require a mezuzah since buildings that require a mezuzah open up to them. Even if there were ten structures, each one leading to the next, if the innermost one requires a mezuzah, all of them would require a mezuzah. Therefore, the Sages ruled that a gate that leads from a garden to a courtyard requires a mezuzah.
