418. Attaching the Mezuzah
Tefillin, Mezuzah v’Sefer Torah 5:6
A mezuzah is rolled from the end to the beginning so that when one opens it, he will be able to read from the start to the finish. After rolling the mezuzah, it is placed it in a tube of reed, wood, or any other material and attached with a nail to the doorpost of one's entryway. One may also hollow out the doorpost and place the mezuzah inside it.
Tefillin, Mezuzah v’Sefer Torah 5:7
Before attaching the mezuzah to the doorpost, one recites the bracha that God “sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to attach the mezuzah.” One does not recite a bracha when writing a mezuzah because the mitzvah is in attaching it to the doorpost.
