395. Inserting the Parchments

Tefillin, Mezuzah v’Sefer Torah 3:5

For the tefillin of the head, the last passage, v’haya im shamoa, is placed in the first compartment on the right side of the one wearing the tefillin. The passage of Shema is placed next to it, followed by v’haya ki y’viacha, and then kadesh li is placed in the last compartment, to the left of the one wearing the tefillin. Accordingly, the passages will appear in the opposite order to a person facing the one wearing the tefillin. If the order of the passages is changed, the tefillin are invalid.

Tefillin, Mezuzah v’Sefer Torah 3:6

The passages of arm tefillin are written on four columns on one piece of parchment, like a sefer Torah, in the order in which they appear in the Torah. If they were written on four pieces of parchment and inserted into the one compartment, one fulfills his obligation; it is not necessary to glue them together.
