Sheviis 9:6-7

Sheviis 9:6

One who gathers fresh herbs may eat them until the moisture evaporates. If he gathers dry herbs, he may eat them until the second rainy period. Leaves of reeds and vines may be eaten until they dry up and fall off. If he gathers these leaves dry, he may eat them until the second rainy period. Rabbi Akiva permits all of these things until the second rainy period.

Sheviis 9:7

Along similar lines, if a person rents a house “until the rains,” that means until the second rainy period. If a person vowed not to derive benefit from someone “until the rains,” that means until the second rainy period. The needy may enter orchards to gather the portions designated for them until the second rainy period. One may use and burn straw of the sabbatical year starting from the second rainy period.
