357. The Torah Readings for Yom Kippur and Succos
Tefillah u’Birkas Kohanim 13:11
On Yom Kippur in the morning, we read from parshas Acharei Mos (Leviticus 16). The haftarah is “For thus says the High and Exalted One” (Isaiah 57). In the afternoon, we read from Acharei Mos about the forbidden sexual relations, so that one who has violated any of these laws will remember, feel ashamed, and repent. The third person called to the Torah reads the entire Book of Jonah as the haftarah.
Tefillah u’Birkas Kohanim 13:12
On the first two days of Succos, we read the section about the holidays, “An ox, a sheep or a goat” (Leviticus 22). The haftarah on the first day is “Behold, the day of God is coming” (Zechariah 14). On the second day, the haftarah is “They assembled to King Solomon” (I Kings 8). On the last day of the holiday, we read “Every firstborn” (Deuteronomy 15). The haftarah is “When Solomon had finished” (I Kings 8). On the next day, we read parshas V’Zos HaBracha. For the haftarah, we read “Solomon stood” (I Kings 8). Some read Joshua 1 as the haftarah. [Editor’s note: this is our practice.] On the other days of Succos, we read the sections about the sacrifices offered on the holiday.
