351. Rolling the Torah

Tefillah u’Birkas Kohanim 12:23

We do not publicly read the Torah from chumashim. A Torah should not be rolled to a new spot in front of the congregation as this poses an inconvenience to them. Therefore, if it is necessary to read from two different places, two Torahs are used. One person should not read the same topic from two Torahs because people might think that something was wrong with the first Torah.

Tefillah u’Birkas Kohanim 12:24

When the Torah is rolled shut, it should be rolled from the outside. When tying it, it should be tied from the inside. The stitching should be positioned in the middle so that the parchment won’t rip. If the Torah is kept in a different room, the congregation may not leave until the Torah scroll has been taken. They should accompany it to the place where it resides.
