320. U'va L'Tziyon on Shabbos and Yom Tov

Tefillah u’Birkas Kohanim 9:12

As noted in 9:11, the bracha of Magen Avos was instituted to keep people in shul longer on Friday nights. Therefore, when yom tov, Rosh Chodesh or Yom Kippur falls on Shabbos, the shaliach tzibbur who davens maariv does not mention the special aspect of the day in Magen Avos. Rather, he concludes, “Who sanctifies the Sabbath,” only mentioning Shabbos because this bracha is not recited on other days.

Tefillah u’Birkas Kohanim 9:13

On Shabbos and yom tov, after the shaliach tzibbur completes the recitation of the shacharis Shemoneh Esrei, he recites kaddish followed by Tehilla l'David (i.e., Ashrei). He recites kaddish again, after which the congregation davens musaf silently. The shaliach tzibbur then recites the musaf Shemoneh Esrei out loud, the same was as was done at shacharis. He recites kaddish after musaf and everyone departs.

We do not recite U’va L’Tziyon after shacharis on Shabbos and yom tov. Rather, it is recited before mincha. We recite Ashrei, U’va L’Tziyon, and various prayers. The shaliach tzibbur recites kaddish and everyone davens mincha silently. Finally, the shaliach tzibbur repeats Shemoneh Esrei out loud, followed by kaddish.
