304. Brachos on Torah Study

Tefillah u’Birkas Kohanim 7:10

If a person gets up early to study Torah, either the Written or the Oral Law, before reciting Shema, he first washes his hands and recites the following three brachos:

“…Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us regarding words of Torah.”

“Please, Hashem, our God, make the words of Your Torah pleasant in our mouths and the mouths of Your people, the entire House of Israel. May we, our children, and the children of Your people, know of Your name and occupy themselves with Your Torah. Blessed are You, Hashem, the One Who teaches Torah to His people Israel.”

“Blessed are You, Hashem, our God, King of the universe, Who has selected us of all the nations and given us His Torah. Blessed are You, Hashem, the One Who gives the Torah.”

Tefillah u’Birkas Kohanim 7:11

One must recite the three brachos on Torah study every day. Afterwards, we read a few words of Torah. Some people have adopted the practice to read the Priestly blessing; in some places, they read Numbers 28:1-9, “Command the children of Israel...;” in other places, they read both of these. We also, read chapters or laws from the Mishna and the Braisos. (The Braisos are teachings that are contemporary with the Mishna but that were not included in the Mishna.)
