287. Eight Things for Davening

Tefillah u’Birkas Kohanim 5:1

When davening, a person must take care of eight things. If circumstances do not permit him to take care of these things, or even if he intentionally ignores them, they do not disqualify his prayer. These eight things are: (1) standing; (2) facing the Temple; (3) preparing the body; (4) appropriate clothes; (5) appropriate location; (6) control of the voice; (7) bowing; and (8) prostrating.

Tefillah u’Birkas Kohanim 5:2

One should only daven while standing. Therefore, a person who is sitting in a boat or riding in a carriage should stand if he is able to do so. If not, he may daven where he is seated. A sick person may even daven while lying on his side, so long as he is able to give his prayers the proper intentions. A person suffering from hunger or thirst is considered the same as a sick person, so if he can concentrate sufficiently, he should daven. If not he cannot focus, he should not daven until after he has eaten or drunk. A person who is riding on an animal should not get down, even if there is someone else there who can hold his animal. Rather, he should remain in his place on his mount and daven there so that his mind will be settled.
