264. When One May Not Use the Abbreviated Text
Tefillah u’Birkas Kohanim 2:4
The abbreviated text of Shemoneh Esrei (in 2:3) is only an option in the summer months. One may not recite it in the winter months because he must recite the request for rain in the bracha about prosperity. Similarly, on Saturday night and the night following a yom tov, one may not recite the abbreviated text because he must recite havdalah in the blessing about knowledge.
Tefillah u’Birkas Kohanim 2:5
On Shabbos and yom tov, one recites seven blessings in each of the four prayer services of the day. This includes the usual first three and last three brachos, plus one in the middle specific to that particular day. On Shabbos, one concludes the intermediate bracha that God sanctifies Shabbos. On Festivals, one concludes that God sanctifies Israel and the proper occasion. When Shabbos and yom tov coincide, one concludes that God sanctifies Shabbos, Israel and the proper occasion. On Rosh Hashana, one concludes that God is “King over the entire Earth, Who sanctifies Israel and the Day of Remembrance.” If it is Shabbos, he concludes that God is “King over the entire Earth, Who sanctifies Shabbos, Israel and the Day of Remembrance.”
