247. Distance from Uncleanliness

Kriyas Shema 3:7

One may not recite Shema next to excrement even if it is as dry as pottery. However, one may do so if it so dry that throwing it would cause it to crumble. If urine has been absorbed by the ground but it is still able to wet a person’s hand, Shema may not be recited next to it. If it has dried more than this, Shema may be recited there.

Kriyas Shema 3:8

A person must distance himself four cubits (about six feet) from excrement or urine in order to recite the Shema. This is when they are to his side or behind him; if they are in front of him, he must move so that he cannot see them, then he can recite Shema.
