244. Shema in a Bathroom

Kriyas Shema 3:1

A person should wash his hands with water before reciting Shema. If it’s time for Shema and he cannot find water, he should not delay saying Shema in order to look for water. In such a case, one should clean his hands with sand, a rock, a piece of wood, or something similar, then recite Shema.

Kriyas Shema 3:2

One may not recite Shema in a bathhouse or a bathroom, even if it is free of excrement. Similarly, one may not recite Shema in a cemetery, nor next to a dead body. If one distances himself four cubits (about six feet) from the graves or the body, then he may do so. If a person recites Shema in a place where he shouldn’t have, he must recite it again in an appropriate location.
