235. Reciting Shema Without Intention
Kriyas Shema 1:13
If a person recited Shema after the third hour of the day, he does not fulfill his obligation to recite Shema in its proper time even if he was delayed by circumstances beyond his control. He does, however, have the merit of Torah study. A person should recite the blessings before and after Shema all day, even if he recites Shema after the third hour.
Kriyas Shema 2:1
If a person recites the verse of Shema Yisroel without intention, he does not fulfill his obligation to recite the Shema. If one recites the rest without intention, he does fulfill his obligation. Even a person studying Torah or proofreading these paragraphs when it’s the time to recite the Shema can fulfill his obligation if he has intention to do so while reading the first verse.
