Machshirin 5:6-7

Machshirin 5:6

If a person beat a hide (to remove water), ki yutan applies if he does so out of water but not if he does so into water. Rabbi Yosi says that ki yutan also applies if he does so into water because his intention is for the water to come out with the waste.

Machshirin 5:7

Ki yutan doesn’t apply to water that goes up on a ship, its ballast or its oars. Similarly, ki yutan doesn’t apply to the ship's various traps and nets but if one shook them (to remove the water), then ki yutan does apply. If one took the ship to the Great Sea (referring either to the Mediterranean or the ocean) to strengthen it, or if one takes a (hot) nail into the rain to strengthen it, or if one takes a (burning) brand into the rain to douse it – ki yutan applies in all of these cases.
