Joseph

Many have the practice to recite, in the prayer following Shemoneh Esrei, a verse that starts and ends with the same letter as their name, or that contains their name, or both. This is considered a source of merit. In this series, we will briefly analyze these verses.

ה' יִגְמֹר בַּעֲדִי ה' חַסְדְּךָ לְעוֹלָם מַעֲשֵׂי יָדֶיךָ אַל תֶּרֶף

God will accomplish for me. G-d, Your kindness is eternal! Do not ignore Your handiwork. - Psalms 138:8

This is the verse for the name Yoseif (Joseph). The verb yigmor, rendered here "accomplish," comes from the Hebrew root GMR, meaning to complete. The Radak explains the intention of King David, the author of this Psalm: God had already begun to bless David with His kindness, by making him king. Here, David prays that God "finish the job" and bring the full measure of His kindness to fruition.
