144. Two Types of False Prophet
Avodas Kochavim 5:8
A false prophet includes both one who relates something that he claims falsely to have received in a prophetic vision and one who relates a matter that he heard from another prophet, claiming that the prophecy was given to him. Each of these is executed by strangulation.
Avodas Kochavim 5:9
If one refrains from executing a false prophet because of the condemned’s perceived greatness, he violates the prohibition of “Do not fear him” (Deuteronomy 18:22). Also included in “Do not fear him” is not to withhold testimony against a false prophet and not to be afraid because of his words.
A false prophet may be tried only by the great Sanhedrin, which had 71 judges.
