115. How to Place and Lift a Ban
Talmud Torah 7:2
To issue a ban, the court announces “Such-and-such person is placed under a ban.” If the ban is issued in the offender’s presence, the court announces, “This person, such-and-such, is under a ban.” If he is excommunicated, they announce “Such-and-such person is excommunicated.” To say that someone is cursed suggests being placed under a ban.
Talmud Torah 7:3
A ban and excommunication are lifted when the court tells the offender, “You are released. You are forgiven.” If the offender is not present, they say: “Such-and-such person is released. Such-and-such person is forgiven.”
