3,958. The Turban and the Tzitz
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 8:19
The turban of both a regular kohein and of a Kohein Gadol was sixteen cubits long (about 24’). The sash was around three fingerbreadths wide by thirty-two cubits long (approximately 2.25”x48’). The kohanim wrapped it around themselves repeatedly. The kohanic garments were not sewn; they were woven, as per Exodus 39:22: “the work of a weaver.”
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 9:1
The tzitz (the gold plate worn on the Kohein Gadol’s forehead) was made as follows: they made a gold plate two fingerbreadths wide (about 1.5”) that goes over the Kohein Gadol’s forehead one ear to the other. On it was written “Kodesh Lashem” (“Holy to God”) on two lines, with Kodesh on the bottom and Lashem on the top. If the words were written on one line, the tzitz was valid. In fact, there were times when these words were written on the same line.
