1,276. A Woman Who Dies in Childbirth
197:10 Taharah is performed and burial shrouds are made even in a case where blood came out of the wounded person but it stopped, they removed his clothes, and he remained alive for several days before dying. Taharah is also performed even for one who is stained with his blood. There's no concern that blood that came out while he was alive is "lifeblood." We are only concerned that the blood that leaves a person at the time of his death is lifeblood, or may be mixed with lifeblood.
197:11 A woman who died during childbirth is like a person who was killed. If we know that she bled heavily, taharah isn't performed. However, if the blood already stopped and she died after so that there is no concern about lifeblood, then we treat her like any other deceased person. In many communities they have the practice to purify any woman who dies in childbirth. There are also many other customs regarding a woman who gives birth; each place should follow its own practices.
