3,756. What to Do With Leftover Shemittah Produce
Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 7:3
If a person has a large volume of produce, he should give enough food for three meals to every person he wishes. No one, neither the rich nor the poor, may eat shemittah produce after the time for its removal. If one can’t find people to eat the produce at its time of removal, he must burn it, throw it into the sea, or destroy it in some other way.
Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 7:4
Let’s say that someone has shemittah raisins. If grapes can no longer be found in the fields, the gardens, and the ownerless orchards, but there are still grapes on the vines in the courtyards, he may not eat the raisins on account of the latter. This is because the grapes in courtyards are not accessible to wild animals. However, if there are firm grapes still growing in the field that won’t mature until the end of the year, then one may eat the raisins on their account. The same is true in all comparable cases.
