3,752. Spending Shemittah Money

Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 6:10

Money received in exchange for shemittah produce may not be used to settle a debt, as a reciprocal gift or to repay a favor. One may not use it to pay tzedakah that he pledged in shul, but he may send things for acts of kindness with it, provided that he informs the recipients of its status. It may likewise not be used to buy servants, real estate or a non-kosher animal. If it was used for any of these, he must use the same sum of money to buy secular food and eat it in the manner of shemittah produce, the same as one would do with second tithe. One may not use money received for shemittah produce to buy birds for the sacrifices of a zav, a zavah or a woman who has given birth, nor for sin offerings or guilt offerings. If he used the money for any of these, he must use the same sum of money to buy secular food and eat it in the manner of shemittah produce. One may not use shemittah oil to oil utensils or animal skins. If one did so, he must use the same sum of money to buy secular food and eat it in the manner of shemittah produce.

Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 6:11

Money received in exchange for shemittah produce may not be used to pay a bathhouse attendant, one who lets blood, the captain of a boat or any other kind of craftsman, but one may use it to pay one who draws water to drink from a well for him. One may give a craftsman shemittah produce, or money received for shemittah produce, as a gift.
