1,198. Avoiding Oaths

181:17 A person should always try to avoid making even a true oath as much as possible.

181:18 If one's opponent is obligated to swear an oath to him in court and he sees that the opponent is going to swear falsely, he should try as hard as possible to settle the case rather than allow his opponent to swear falsely, as per Exodus 22:10, "the oath of Hashem will be between both of them," which our Sages understood to mean that the oath applies to them both.
