3,608. The First Fruits "Confession"
Hilchos Bikkurim 3:10
There is a Torah obligation to recite the first fruits “confession” when bringing them to the Temple. One starts by reciting Deuteronomy 26:3-10: “I declare to Hashem your God today that I have come to the land.... An Aramean tried to destroy my forefather....” He recites the whole passage until “that You gave me, Hashem.” This “confession” is only recited in the Hebrew, as per verse 5: “You shall respond and say,” meaning verbatim as it is written in the Torah.
Hilchos Bikkurim 3:11
Originally, those who knew how to read would read the first fruits “confession” for themselves, while those who couldn’t read would repeat it after someone who read it for them. This caused those who couldn’t read to refrain from bringing their first fruits, because they would end up being embarrassed. The court therefore enacted that the “confession” would be read for those who know how to read just like it is for those who can’t.
