#135: Machshavah

In his introduction to the Zemirot Shabbat HaMevu’ar published by Oz V’hadar, Rav Menachem Pomerantz elaborates on the idea of the Jewish people being saved from their enemies in the merit of singing zemirot: “As is known, the holy zemirot Shabbat also have the power and capability to stand at the side of [this] poor, destitute nation and to save them from those that rise up against us. This may be derived as follows; the name “zemirot” comes from the verse “the cut of the tyrants, He will subdue” (Yeshayahu 25:5). [Zemirot] can cut and sever all who antagonize and prosecute. [The zemirot] nullify what is written “I said I will destroy them” (Devarim 32:26) and save them from all difficult decrees, to the point that “Salvation belongs to the Lord, and Your blessing is solemnly upon Your people” (Tehillim 3:9).”

In addition to our other efforts to help Am Yisrael during this period, we can make a special effort to learn the meaning of the Shabbat zemirot and sing them with intensity and enthusiasm. May our doing so serve as a merit for our soldiers and all our other fellow Jews who are in danger, in Eretz Yisrael and around the world.
