#132: Resting on Shabbat Day (Part 2)

  1. One who rests on Shabbat should not verbalize that she is resting in order to stay awake late or have additional strength on Motzai Shabbat, as this has the appearance of performing an act on Shabbat to prepare for the week (hachanah), which is forbidden (Mishnah Berurah 290:4). However, one may mentally have this intent, provided it is not stated explicitly.
  2. Some halachic authorities permit stating explicitly that one is resting on Shabbat in order to have strength to perform a mitzvah after Shabbat (e.g., Torah study, nichum aveileim, tending to communal needs) (Torat Shabbat 290:2). Others maintain that one should not verbalize one’s intention even if it pertains to studying Torah or another mitzvah (Aruch Hashulchan 290:1).
