Tamid 6:2-3

Tamid 6:2

The one who won the right to bring the shovel made a pile of live coals on the top of the inside altar, which he then spread out flat with the end of the shovel. He bowed down and left.

Tamid 6:3

The one who won the right to offer the incense took the censer from the middle of the pan and gave it to a friend or relative. If some of the incense spilled into the pan, this assistant would put it into the officiating kohein’s hands. The others would caution him not to start immediately in front of himself, which might cause him to get burned. He would spread out the incense and when he was done, he would exit. The one who offered the incense didn’t do so until the Temple official gave him the go-ahead. If the Kohein Gadol was offering the incense, the official would say, “My master Kohein Gadol, burn the incense!” The others would leave, he would offer the incense, bow down and exit.
