Tamid 2:3-4

Tamid 2:3

Next, the kohanim started piling the logs for the fire. Any type of wood was acceptable except for olivewood and grapevines. Primarily, they used wood from fig trees, nut trees and resin trees.

Tamid 2:4

The kohein who had removed the ashes arranged the large woodpile on the east side of the altar, facing east with the heads ends of the logs touching the heap (see Mishna 2:2). Space was left between the logs to light the kindling.
