#10: Traveling on Friday (Part 2)

  1. The Aruch Hashulchan & Mishnah Berurah (O.C. 249), followed by contemporary poskim, write that even if the original enactment does not apply in full force, one must still be careful to plan a trip on Friday to arrive at one's destination before Shabbat begins. The Aruch HaShulchan even writes that "the Satan looks to accuse on Friday" if one is not careful about this.
  2. Rabbi Dovid Heber of the Star-K and others recommend leaving about double the amount of time to travel (for car, train, or flight travel) as it usually takes, and taking into account potential delays, major traffic jams, weather, etc. (https://www.star-k.org/articles/kashrus-kurrents/89/erev-shabbos-gridlock). If one anticipates getting stuck late Friday afternoon on the road, one should be in touch with a rabbinic authority to discuss possible options.
