3,445. Taking Tithes From Demai
Hilchos Maaser 9:5
Tithes are taken from demai as follows: one puts aside a volume equal to the volume of terumas maaser, which is one-hundredth of the whole. He puts this next to the produce and says, "This is the tithe, and the rest of the tithes are next to it." He then says, "What I have put aside as tithes is terumas maaser for the rest of the tithes that are next to it." He takes this portion and gives it to a kohein. He must do things in this order because one may not intentionally take terumas maaser before the tithes. After doing this, he takes second tithe.
Hilchos Maaser 9:6
When it comes to demai, one may separate second tithe before first tithe. If he wishes, he designates the second tithe of the produce in the north or in the south of the produce and he transfers its sanctity to some money. Similarly, one who buys a loaf of bread from a baker takes from it enough for terumas maaser and challah, saying that one-hundredth of the loaf is tithes and the rest of the tithes are next to it. He designates that portion as terumas maaser for the rest of the tithes that are next to it. The rest of what he puts aside beyond one-hundredth is challah, while the second tithe is in the north or the south and its sanctity is transferred to some money. After doing this, he may eat the bread.
