Hafrashas Challah - Multigrain
QUESTION: I made multigrain bread using all of the five grains (wheat, barley, spelt, oats and rye). The dough was comprised of one pound of flour from each type of grain. Is it obligated in hafrashas challah?
ANSWER: Yes. We have previously seen that one cannot separate challah from one species to exempt a different species. However, if the flours are all mixed together so that they form one dough, the Shulchan Aruch (YD 324:2) writes that even different grains combine for the shiur challah. Only one piece of dough needs to be separated, since the dough will contain some amount from each of the five grains. The Taz (YD 324:2) writes that even if one made five separate one-pound pieces of dough from each of the five grains and then vigorously mixed them together to form one homogenous piece of dough, this dough would be obligated in challah, and it would be enough to take off one piece of challah.
