Numbers 10:35
It happened, when the ark set forward, that Moses said, “Arise, Hashem, and let Your enemies be scattered; and let those who hate You flee before You.”
We recite this verse when taking the Torah out of the ark. It and the next verse are flanked by a pair of inverted Hebrew letter nuns, which the Talmud (Shabbos 116a) says designates the section as a book unto itself. Therefore, the Talmud tells us, the Torah consists of seven books: (1) Genesis, (2) Exodus, (3) Leviticus, (4) Numbers until 10:34, (5) Numbers 10:35-36, (6) Numbers 11:1 until the end, and (7) Deuteronomy. In terms of practical halacha, the Mishna (Yadayim 3:5) rules that 85 letters – the number of letters in these two verses – is the smallest number that can instill sanctity in a scroll.
