3,097. Animals That Resemble One Another

Hilchos Kilayim 9:3

If someone violated the halacha and mated his animal with a different species, one is permitted to benefit from the offspring. If both of the species involved were kosher animals, the offspring is may be eaten, as we discussed in Maachalos Assuros chapter 1.

Hilchos Kilayim 9:4

Even though two types of domesticated animals or wild animals may resemble one another and are able to breed, if they’re of two different species, it’s prohibited to mate them. Accordingly, a wolf and a dog, a wild dog and a fox, a deer and a goat, a mountain goat and a sheep, a horse and a mule, a mule and a donkey, a donkey and a wild ass – all of these are prohibited as mixed species even though the animals resemble one another.
