3,094. The Measurements Used for Mixed Species

Hilchos Kilayim 8:11

As was discussed in chapter 6, even if one distances between vegetables and a vine, one must ensure that the vine not provide shade for the vegetables, nor vice versa. If someone planted vegetables or grain that grew and he later draped a vine over them, the straw remains permitted but the crops must be burned. If the roots of a vine come out in the four cubits between a vineyard and other crops, it must be uprooted. If the roots of the crops come out in these four cubits, they remain permitted.

Hilchos Kilayim 8:12

All of the distances that one must measure and separate when it comes to mixed species are measured using cubits of six unclenched handbreadths. We don’t use clenched handbreadths when measuring for mixed species; clenched handbreadths are only used in order to be stringent.
